Frequently asked
Can I bake these hush puppies instead of deep-frying?
Yes, for a lighter option, drop spoonfuls onto a greased baking sheet and bake at 400°F for 12–15 minutes, flipping halfway. They won't be as crispy but will still be delicious.
Why are my hush puppies greasy?
Greasiness usually means the oil wasn't hot enough. Ensure it reaches 350°F before frying, and don't overcrowd the skillet. Drain on paper towels immediately.
Can I make the batter ahead of time?
It's best to fry immediately after mixing, as the batter will thicken and lose its lightness. If needed, refrigerate for up to 1 hour, then stir in a tablespoon of milk to adjust consistency.
What can I serve with hush puppies?
They pair perfectly with fried fish, coleslaw, or as a side to soups and stews. Try dipping in honey butter, ranch dressing, or extra Tabasco sauce.
