- 1/4 ground cumin
- 1 basmati rice
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- 1/2 salt

Remove from heat. Let stand 3 minutes. Remove cinnamon stick and fluff with a fork before serving.
Cook's notes
- For the best flavor, toast the turmeric and cumin just until fragrant—don’t let them burn, or they’ll turn bitter.
- Use a tight-fitting lid when simmering the rice to ensure even cooking and fluffy grains.
- Let the rice stand for 3 minutes off the heat before fluffing; this allows the steam to finish the cooking process.
Easy swaps
- Instead of basmati rice, use jasmine rice or long-grain white riceAdjust water slightly if needed (jasmine may need a bit less).
- Instead of cinnamon sticks, use 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamonAdd with the turmeric and cumin; flavor will be more intense.
Frequently asked
Can I use brown rice instead?
Yes, but you’ll need to increase the water to about 2.5 cups and simmer for 40-45 minutes. Toast the spices first as directed.
Why is my rice sticky?
Sticky rice usually means too much water or stirring too much. Use the exact water ratio and avoid stirring after boiling.
Can I add vegetables or protein?
Absolutely! Stir in peas, carrots, or chickpeas after the rice is cooked. For protein, add cooked chicken or tofu before serving.
