Agua Fresca De Pina (Pineapple)

I love aguas and this one is a little different. The mint makes it refreshing. Note: To make your glasses look festive you can wet the rim of the glass with water, juice or by running a lime or lemon along the rim. Then, dip the glass in decorative sugar of your choice.

Refreshing, vibrant, and incredibly easy to make, this authentic Agua Fresca de Piña is the ultimate thirst-quencher. Made with fresh, sweet pineapple, a splash of lime, and a hint of natural sweetener, this traditional Mexican fruit drink is the perfect vegan beverage for hot summer days, backyard barbecues, or a light afternoon pick-me-up.

Ingredients

Makes 6 servings

  • 3 fresh pineapple chunks
  • 1/4 fresh lime juice
  • 1/2 - 1 of fresh mint
  • 1/3 sugar
  • 2 mint sprigs

Method

  1. Place pineapple, lime juice, mint and sugar in blender container.

  2. Blend on High until mixture is frothy, about 30 seconds to 1 minute.

  3. Pour into a tall pitcher. Add club soda and stir once or twice to mix. Immedieately pour itno 6 sugar-dipped ice-filled glasses. Garnish each serving with a mint sprig.

Cook's notes

  • Choose a very ripe, gold pineapple for the sweetest and most aromatic flavor.
  • Don't discard the pineapple core! It contains plenty of flavor and juice, so blend it along with the flesh.
  • For a smoother consistency, pour the blended mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or a nut milk bag to remove the fibrous pulp.
  • Serve over plenty of crushed ice to keep the drink chilled without diluting the flavor too quickly.

Easy swaps

  • Sweetener: If you prefer not to use refined sugar, agave nectar, maple syrup, or a liquid stevia extract work perfectly as vegan alternatives.
  • Herb Infusion: Add a few fresh mint sprigs or a pinch of tajín (chili-lime seasoning) to the rim for a sophisticated flavor twist.
  • Texture: For a creamy 'piña colada' vibe, blend in a half-cup of canned coconut milk.

Frequently asked

Is Agua Fresca de Piña healthy?

Yes! It is a hydrating, plant-based drink made from whole fruit. By controlling the amount of added sweetener, you can keep it light and refreshing.

Do I need to strain the pineapple pulp?

Straining is optional. If you prefer a pulpy, juice-like texture, you can leave it unstrained, but most traditional recipes prefer a smooth, strained liquid.

How long does it take to make?

This recipe is incredibly fast, taking less than 20 minutes from cutting the fruit to serving in a glass.
