Ingredients

Makes 15 servings

  • 6 cooking apples
  • 1 cinnamon
  • 1 white flour
  • 1 rolled oats
  • 2 toasted wheat germ
  • 3/4 white sugar
  • 3/4 dark brown sugar
  • 1 salt

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350. To make the crumble topping combine all the ingredients except the apples and cinnamon in a mixing bowl. Mix until well combined, should be crumbly, set aside. In a 9 by 13 baking dish, place the apples and toss with cinnamon. Put the crumble topping on top and place in the oven uncovered. Bake for about one hour. The crust should be golden and the apples should be oozing a little on the sides.

Cook's notes

  • For the best texture, use a mix of tart apples like Granny Smith and sweet varieties like Honeycrisp.
  • Cut your apples into uniform slices to ensure they cook evenly while the topping bakes.
  • Don't overmix the cobbler topping dough; a few lumps are perfectly fine and will keep the crust light and fluffy.
  • Serve warm with a scoop of dairy-free vanilla bean ice cream for the classic cobbler experience.

Easy swaps

  • Use gluten-free all-purpose flour blend to make this recipe GF-friendly.
  • Replace refined sugar with coconut sugar for a deeper, caramel-like flavor profile.
  • Swap unsalted vegan butter for melted coconut oil if preferred.
  • Add a handful of chopped walnuts or pecans to the biscuit topping for an extra crunch.
