Apple Oatmeal (Crock-Pot)
I liked this as a change from regular oatmeal - and it is ready when you wake up! Although the original recipe uses wheat berries, I used oat bran with great results. Recipe source: The Healthy Slow Cooker

Ingredients
Makes 6 servings
- 1 1/2 steel cut oats
- 1/2 apples
- 2 cinnamon
- 1/2 vanilla
- 1/2 water
- 3 1/2 cranberry juice
- 1 walnuts
- wheat germ

Stir in water and juice.
Cover and cook on low for 8 hours or overnight.
Stir well.
Top with walnuts and/or wheatgerm or your favorite toppings.
Cook's notes
- Use steel-cut oats for the best texture; they hold up beautifully over the long cooking time without becoming mushy.
- Spray your slow cooker insert with non-stick cooking spray or use a slow cooker liner to make cleanup effortless.
- If you prefer a thicker oatmeal, remove the lid during the last 30 minutes of cooking to allow excess moisture to evaporate.
Easy swaps
- Substitute apples with pears or diced peaches for a seasonal twist.
- Swap the maple syrup for agave nectar or coconut sugar depending on your preference.
- Add chopped walnuts or pecans at the end for an extra crunch and healthy fats.
Frequently asked
Can I use rolled oats instead of steel-cut?
Rolled oats cook much faster and may turn to mush in a 7-8 hour slow cooker cycle. If you only have rolled oats, reduce the cooking time to 2-3 hours on low.
Is this recipe gluten-free?
Yes, provided you ensure your oats are certified gluten-free, as oats are often processed in facilities that handle wheat.
Will the milk curdle in the slow cooker?
Using plant-based milks like almond, soy, or oat milk generally works very well in the slow cooker and is less likely to curdle than dairy milk.
