Breakfast

Warm up your mornings with this homemade Apple Pie Granola, a delicious vegan breakfast that brings the comforting flavors of a classic Canadian apple pie into your cereal bowl. Packed with hearty oats, dried apples, warm spices, and a hint of maple syrup, this crispy, golden-brown granola is easy to make from scratch and perfect for feeding a crowd during brunch.

Ingredients

Makes 14 servings

  • 3 1/2 rolled oats
  • 1 1/4 wheat germ
  • 1 cinnamon
  • 1/4 clove
  • 1/2 allspice
  • 3/4 Zapple Butter
  • 1/3 maple syrup
  • 1 vanilla
  • 1 salt

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350F and line a baking sheet with parchment or SilPat.

  2. In a bowl, toss together the oats, wheat germ and spices.

  3. Add the apple butter, maple syrup, vanilla and salt, stirring well to evenly coat everything.

  4. Spread in one even layer on the baking sheet.

  5. Bake for 25 minutes, then stir to break apart and bake a further 20-25 minutes until well browned and firm.

  6. Cool 10 minutes then fold in the dried apples and cool completely on the tray.

Cook's notes

  • For extra crunch, let the granola cool completely on the baking sheet without stirring; this creates those coveted large clusters.
  • Toss in the dried apples after baking to prevent them from becoming too chewy or tough in the oven.
  • Use parchment paper or a silicone baking mat to ensure easy cleanup and prevent sticking.

Easy swaps

  • Swap maple syrup for agave nectar or brown rice syrup if preferred.
  • Add chopped walnuts or pecans before baking for an extra nutty crunch and healthy fats.
  • Use gluten-free certified rolled oats to make this recipe safe for those with celiac disease.

Frequently asked

Is this apple pie granola vegan?

Yes, this recipe is 100% plant-based, using maple syrup as a sweetener and ensuring no dairy products are included.

How do I get those big granola clusters?

The secret to chunky granola is to pack the mixture down firmly onto the baking sheet before baking and to avoid stirring it while it cools.

Can I use fresh apples instead of dried?

This recipe works best with dried apples. Fresh apples contain too much moisture and will make the granola soggy instead of crispy.
