Asian Apple Pear Compote

I had a surplus of apple pears so experimented! You could serve this for breakfast with cinnamon toast or put on ice cream with a chocolate sauce or anywhere that you would use stewed fruit. You may want to add some sugar when cooking it if you like things sweet.

Warm up your mornings or elevate your dessert game with this simple, naturally sweet Asian Apple Pear Compote. Infused with aromatic spices, this vegan-friendly recipe transforms crisp Asian pears into a tender, luscious topping that is perfect for oatmeal, yogurt, or pancakes. It is a quick, wholesome, and comforting treat that celebrates seasonal flavors in under 40 minutes.

Ingredients

Makes 1 serving

  • 4 Asian pears
  • 1/4 water
  • 1 ground ginger
  • 3 cardamom seeds

Method

  1. Place all the ingredients in a saucepan and cook over low heat until the fruit is soft but not falling apart.

  2. Watch, you will probably have to add a little more water once or twice during the cooking so as not to scorch the fruit.

  3. Don't drown them, just a couple of tbsp at a time.

  4. Remove Cardamom seeds and serve.

Cook's notes

  • Use slightly firm Asian pears to ensure the chunks hold their shape without turning into applesauce.
  • Add a splash of lemon juice to balance the natural sweetness and brighten the overall flavor profile.
  • For a deeper flavor, simmer the compote until the liquid thickens into a glossy, syrup-like consistency.

Easy swaps

  • Swap Asian pears for Bosc or Bartlett pears if they are out of season.
  • Use coconut sugar or maple syrup as a refined sugar-free sweetener alternative.
  • Add a pinch of ground ginger or star anise to customize the spice profile to your liking.
