Ingredients
Makes 1 serving
- 1 frozen strawberries
- 3 flour
- 2 evaporated milk
- 1 sugar
- 1 butter
- 1/2 vanilla
Method
Prepare cake as directed in 13x9 pan, from a mix or using your favorite white sheet cake recipe.
When cake is hot from oven, poke holes all over with a skewer and pour strawberries over hot cake.
Prepare icing (rest of ingredients) according to the following directions: In a small saucepan, pour small amount of milk in flour and mix till smooth.
Add rest of milk and cook till thick, stirring to avoid lumps.
Set aside.
In a medium bowl, beat sugar, butter, and vanilla till creamy.
Make sure sugar is dissolved.
Add to cooked flour mixture, blend well.
Pour over cake and refrigerate for at least 3 hours, serve chilled with whipped cream.
Cook's notes
- For best results, use frozen strawberries in syrup or juice, not water-packed, to avoid a watery cake.
- Poke holes generously while the cake is still hot so the strawberry mixture soaks in evenly.
- Whisk the flour-milk mixture constantly to prevent lumps in the icing.
- Refrigerate for at least 3 hours (or overnight) for the flavors to meld and the cake to set properly.
Easy swaps
- Instead of frozen strawberries, use fresh strawberries (mashed with sugar)
- Instead of evaporated milk, use whole milk or half-and-half
- Instead of butter, use margarine or vegan butter substitute
- Instead of white cake mix, use homemade vanilla sheet cake recipe
Frequently asked
Can I use fresh strawberries instead of frozen?
Yes, but mash them with a little sugar and let them sit for 15 minutes to release juice before pouring over the hot cake.
What size pan is best?
A 13x9-inch pan works perfectly. You can also use two 8-inch round pans, but adjust baking time accordingly.
Can I skip the icing?
The icing adds a creamy, rich layer. If you prefer a lighter dessert, serve with just whipped cream and strawberries.
How long does it need to chill?
At least 3 hours, but overnight is even better for the flavors to develop.
