Ingredients

Makes 8 servings

  • 1 ground beef
  • 1 onion
  • 1/2 flour

Method

  1. In a large skillet, brown ground beef.

  2. Drain well.

  3. Add soup, onions and salt& pepper to taste, beef bouillon, add 1 1/2-1 3/4 can of water (using the soup can) to the mixture.

  4. Stir in slowly.

  5. Simmer 15 to 20 minutes.

  6. Thicken gravy with the flour to the consistency you prefer.

  7. Simmer 5 minutes more.

  8. Serve over mashed potatoes.

Cook's notes

  • For best flavor, use 80/20 ground beef and drain excess fat after browning.
  • Adjust gravy thickness by adding flour gradually; whisk to avoid lumps.
  • Let the gravy simmer uncovered if you prefer a thicker consistency.

Easy swaps

  • Instead of 1 ground beef, use Ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
  • Instead of 1/2 flour, use Gluten-free all-purpose flour or cornstarch slurry (1 tbsp cornstarch + 2 tbsp cold water per 1/4 cup flour).
  • Instead of 1 onion, use 1 teaspoon onion powder if fresh onion is unavailable.

Frequently asked

Can I make this gravy ahead of time?

Yes! Prepare the gravy up to 2 days in advance. Reheat gently on the stovetop, adding a splash of water or broth if needed to restore consistency.

What can I serve with Hamburger Gravy besides mashed potatoes?

It's delicious over rice, egg noodles, toast, or even biscuits for a Southern-style twist.

How do I prevent the gravy from being lumpy?

Whisk the flour into the hot liquid slowly, or mix it with a little cold water first to create a slurry before adding to the pan.
